After we learnt how to use emotional intelligence to resolve conflict in part 1, it’s now time to tackle the next step…Conflict Management

In Adrian’s session on conflict management we learnt about the different types of conflict such as Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, Intragroup & Intergroup. It is also important to recognise the different stages of a conflict and know that any conflict has a natural progression towards resolution.
However one of the most important parts of conflict resolution is to recognise the warning signs that a conflict is building. Good mediators will notice these warning signs immediately and understand that a situation is brewing which will require active management to resolve. Look for warning signs such as:

  • High emotion
  • Lack of communication
  • Opposing factions forming
  • Gossip

These are a few of the signs that something is not right and once recognised, you can begin actively doing and saying things which you know will calm the situation and get people talking again.

Among the various different actions that you can use to resolve the conflict, the most important is to keep calm and not let your emotions run wild. This gets easier with practice but is essential to learning how to take a step back, act objectively and resolve the conflict.

In August, JCI Malta hosted two Irish debating champions who delivered a practical workshop on the use of debating skills specifically in conflict resolution and negotiations. This is part 2 of a 2 part-series about the event Convince your Team and Win your Next Negotiation. This event was part of a series of workshops on public speaking, debating, and pitching skills supported by Agenzija Zghazagh Be Active Funds.
