After winning the JCI Public Speaking Competition at a European level, Anthony Galea will be representing Europe and in turn Malta, in the 2018 JCI World Public Speaking Championships in Goa, India.

Dr Anthony Galea, a 31 year old scientist and researcher at the University of Malta, was selected in March when he won the National Public Speaking Competition organised by KNŻ, JCI Malta, and ESU Malta.

His winning speeches at the JCI European Conference which took place in Riga, Latvia between the 19 and 22 June focused on the way young people can contribute to saving the environment. Galea wowed the room in his first round with a home-made prop which he used to demonstrate how air travel can become greener.

In the final round, Galea spoke about how the world’s oceans are still being threatened by plastic pollution.

Galea impressed the international panel of judges with how he managed to use his scientific knowledge, adapt it to his audience, and still deliver his message clearly. His use of humour also contributed to his success which will now place him on the world stage where he will be in the running to become the next JCI World Public Speaking Champion.

This is the first time that Malta has ever won the European Public Speaking Championship and it will be the first time it is competing at World level. In Riga, Malta was represented for the first time during the European JCI Debating Championship. The team composed of Rachel Cassar, Nicole Borg, and Christoph Schwaiger placed second.
